Apple's MacBook Air: A Bundle Of Awesomeness!

Apple's MacBook Air

I just bought my first laptop! AND my first Mac. Since I first put my fingers on a keyboard I've been a PC gal but I took a bite out of the Apple, as it were, when I bought my iPad and I think I'm hooked.

My 13" Air arrived yesterday. I had it deilvered to a friend's house because my intercom is broken and the UPS guy left it with a my friend's neighbor! I had kittens. And then my kittens had kittens. My baby was with a complete stranger!

Fortunately for all concerned my friend's neighbor turned out to be a very sweet elderly Italian lady who invited me in for tea and cookies. But still! She could have been someone visiting from half-way around the word who needed money to support their growing iPhone addiction. For all I know they could have just taken my laptop and disappeared. Anyway, moving on.

Here's a picture of my new 13" MacBook Air in the box. I haven't discovered her name yet, but I'm confident she will tell me what it is.

Pretty, isn't she? (That's my friend's cat, SJ. The first thing he did was climb inside the box and then try to lie across the computer.)

I need to do a few things with her before I can use her and I'm a bit nervous. As I said, I'm a PC gal and I've never really used a Mac before. I hope the learning cure isn't too steep. I'll blog about whatever adventures I had setting her up. (I'm excited!)

This post has been a bit different, more personal; I promise things will be back to normal tomorrow.

Cheers! (And wish me luck! I'm going to need it.)

Thanks for reading. :-)

  1. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts as you transition.

  2. Thanks Donna, I will. I'm booting the Air up for the first time right now. Fingers crossed.

    1. Best of luck. Remember you'll need to purchase a word processing program, be it Word, Scrivener, whatever. Let me know if you want any software recommendations.

  3. Thanks Jazz! I've got the Mac version of MS Word all ready to go, I've even got Scrivener for my new machine. (Yes, I know, I've been splurging a bit lately.) I'm sure you'll be hearing from me fairly soon, "Jazz, how do I ...." ;) Thanks for all your help!

  4. I just got a Mac Book Pro. My first Mac also, and my first non-work-supplied laptop. Loving it so far, but everything is a little different than Windows. Also switching from a mouse to a trackpad is taking some getting used to.

Only problem so far is that I had to reboot before FaceTime would let me log in.

  5. I love the MacBook Pro. It was hard to choose between the Pro and the Air, I only went with the latter because I hope to do some traveling in the next couple of years and, unfortunately, I can't do certain things I need to do from my iPad (such as, for example, post this comment or even a blog).

Glad to hear your experience has been mostly good. That's very encouraging. Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it.

    1. I haven't had much trouble with my iPad. It wasn't able to post a comment on my blog using the super fancy template I was using (it had all kinds of automatic stuff, but the one time I tried to post to it it wouldn't work). I switched to the simple template, but, you know, I don't think I tried commenting with the iPad to make sure it worked.

Also... I picked up Pages from the mac store pretty cheap. It's compatible with the iPad version. When they release the new version of the mac OS it is supposed to support keeping your Pages files in the iCloud so you can easily access Pages files from both you mac and iPad (and, in my case, iPhone -- yes, I'm becoming an Apple fanboi).

  6. Love your blog and thank you for sharing it with me. Your writing style has an infectious (in a good way) feeling of life, laughter and energy that makes me smile. I can’t help but smile, when i read it.
    Good link!! Like it..

  7. I'm looking at Apple macbooks either the macbook pro or air. I wanna know people opinions on them and what they suggest and yes I've become an apple fan got the iphone 4 and love it. I need the laptop for college reason since i'm going for computer science mainly into programming. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

    1. Hi Rajesh!

I wrote this post almost a year ago and I'm glad to say that, more than ever, I think my Air is a bundle of awesomeness!

At the time I wrote this piece I was concerned I'd have trouble transitioning from being a PC gal to using a Mac but, nope. Sure there were one or two time consuming glitches but nothing worth mentioning.

At the time I bought my Air I had intended to use it only as a secondary computer. I needed something I could use while away from my office and my iPad wasn't cutting it (though I love my iPad!).

Over the past year my Air has gone from being a secondary computer to being my primary!

I still have my two PC's, one is about 6 years old and I use it for writing, email, that sort of thing, while the other is a a powerful new computer--a little over a year old now--I had built because I wanted to do graphics work.

But my Mac is so quiet! I didn't think I cared about that before I started using my air. No sound. And it usually doesn't even get hot. I can sit with it in my lap and type for hours. The machine itself is invisible, it just lets me do what I want to do.

But of course, your decision isn't between a Mac or a PC, it's between a Pro or a Air.

Let me say this, even though I use my Air as my primary computer I don't regret not getting the Pro. Okay, sometimes the small screen is a tiny bit irritating, but if I really want a larger screen I can hook it up to a monitor.

I think it depends on what you do, on what you need the computer for. I travel a lot. Half the time I write I'm away from my office and, when I write, my laptop gets taken from room to room, so the reduced weight and streamlined design is a big part of what makes me love this computer.

When I need to replace my graphics computer (hopefully not for a few years) I'll probably get a Pro, though the Air has spoiled me. Unless the amount I travel gets scaled back drastically, the Air will remain my go-to machine.

I hope some of that helped! Either way, I don't think you can go wrong buying a Mac laptop, you'll love it. (grin)
